Macao Telecom Launches Broadband Internet Service

The Macao Telecommunications Company (CTM) on Wednesday officially launched broadband Internet access which enables subscribers to surf the Internet 30 times faster than they do at present.

With the application of Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line ( ADSL), the broadband access is based on a newly constructed network using high-performance switches and network infrastructure from the Cisco Systems Inc.

The new service enables network users to enjoy 1.5-megabyte-per-second access to the Internet -- almost 30 times faster than the current 56-kilobyte-per-second modems.

Customers can use the same telephone line to make phone calls and access Internet services simultaneously. In addition, relevant e-billing, e-payment and e-shopping will be introduced to provide a variety of on-line services to Macao residents.

The broadband Internet access can also greatly promote on-line entertainment and on-line education. Customers can participate in interactive games and watch live broadcasts of news, concerts and sporting events from around the world.

CTM started to provide Internet services in 1995 and the company boasts direct access connecting Macao with China's Hong Kong, inland areas and Taiwan, Singapore, Portugal, Canada and the United States.
