Tianjin Sets Up Four New Wetland Nature Reserves

North China's port city of Tianjin recently set up four wetland nature reserves in its suburbs.

They are the Tianjin Wetland and Ancient Coast Nature Reserve, the Tuanbo Birds Nature Reserve, the Dagang Ancient Lagune Nature Reserve and the Dongli Lake Nature Reserve. These nature reserves occupy a total land area of 115,900 hectares, local environmental protection officials said.

All the four wetlands have a history over 10,000 years and are playing an important role in maintaining ecological balance and providing habitats to migrating birds.

According to experts, it is very rare for four so different wetlands to be located so closely, and they are important for researchers in geography, biology, and oceanography.

Another four wetlands are also being considered as potential nature reserves, the officials said.
