82 Immigrants Captured in Jilin

Police at Jilin Province in northern China have unearthed an illegal immigration case, arresting 82 stowaways and sending them to the provincial capital Changchun.

This is the biggest illegal immigration case in Jilin since 1949.

The Jilin police got clues on July 15 that the notorious "snakeheads" would manage to illegally immigrate more than 50 people out through provincial port city Dalian.

After 15 hours' ambush and five hours' tracking in Dalian, Changchun and Dalian border police jointly arrested all 82 stowaways four days later.

A national report said that in 1999, Chinese border police uncovered 1,300 illegal migration cases, netting in more than 9,000 stowaways and 800 organizers.

After Britain's Dover case in June this year, in which 58 Chinese stowaways died, the Chinese government tightened nationwide anti-illegal-immigration drive.

So far, the campaign is gaining pace in Dalian, Fuzhou, Xiamen, Jiangsu, Jilin and many other provinces and cities.
