China's Jiangxi Province Hit by Severe Drought

A severe drought in East China's Jiangxi is leaving more than 1.5 million residents and 8.25 million mu (549,776 hectares) of crop with severe water shortage.

Meanwhile, a local report said that 570,000 livestock animals were also hard to get drinking water.

Figures showed that 29.5 per cent of affected crops were severely hit while 9.7 per cent will experience total crop failure.

The report added more than 500 small- and medium-sized reservoirs in the province have dried up, and nearly 20,000 of the 90,000 motor-pumped wells can not operate properly due to drought.

It affirmed that the drought spread across most areas of Jiangxi, including Ruichang, Duchang, Jiujiang, Wannian, Nanfeng, Xingguo and Guangchang, and more than 3.4 million people provincial wide have joined the anti-drought campaign.

The Ruichang municipal government in northern Jiangxi organized 27 working teams to carry out the drought-relief efforts.
