China Actively Prepares for Huge Gas-piping Project

China's huge energy project to pipe gas from west to east, expected to cost as much as the Three Gorges Project, will be launched in early 2001.

The gas-piping project is designed to send gas from the country 's major gas production bases in the western parts to the economically-developed Yangtze River Delta areas as well as the eastern regions.

According to today's China Petroleum News, various oilfields in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region are stepping up efforts to explore gas resources. A series of gas-bearing structures including Kara-2 gas field, the country's largest complete gas field, have been discovered.

The newspaper said that China New Star Oil Corporation has invested 180 million yuan for the special purpose of exploring gas resources in the Tarim Basin.

The State Development Planning Commission and the local authorities in the western regions have also worked on plans to construct a group of gas projects.

The gas-piping project will not only tap the huge potential of resources in the west, but will also help reform industries in provinces and cities along the lengthy pipeline.

The gas-piping project will develop and promote petrochemical, iron and steel and building materials sectors.
