Chinese Rush to See Contraception ExhibitionAn exhibition on contraception in the Chinese capital featuring bold-for-China displays on reproduction -- not to mention a box of free condoms at the door -- is attracting crowds of keenly curious and often red-faced visitors. One young man idled about an exhibit on the fetus in uterus, waiting till no one was around to step up for a closer look. The Beijing Family Planning Publicity Center kicked off the show, the first of the kind in China, two weeks ago. More than 1, 000 people have attended the event at the downtown Zhongshan Park, Beijing Daily reported on July 25. The organizers placed a full box of condoms, which are free to all visitors, at the gate. People coming in groups discreetly declined the special gifts, while individual visitors snatched handfuls and ran, the newspaper said. A man and his wife fended off a local TV cameraman filming the exhibit, saying they didn't want to be seen there on TV. The deputy director of the publicity center, Yuan Tiexiang, was quoted as saying that Chinese should not be so shy about their bodies. In China, open discussion of sex has long been taboo. A recent survey of couples in economically-developed southern cities shows that 67 percent claimed to be dissatisfied with their sex life, 30 percent of the newlyweds said they know little about the basics of sex, while two-thirds of the men said they have experienced impotence. "Modern Chinese probably need more exhibitions on sex like this, " said one middle-aged visitor after seeing the show. |
