Economists Across Straits Discuss Cooperation After WTO Entry

Taiwan and north China's largest port city Tianjin held a three-day seminar on how to intensify cultural exchanges and economic cooperation across the straits after the country's entry into the World Trade Organization.

Since yesterday, dozens of social economists and professors from well-known universities in both Tianjin and Taiwan attended a series of meetings on how to keep frequent contacts across the straits and cooperate in ways that will benefit both sides.

Scholars from Taiwan will also be shown around Tianjin port, economic and technological development zone and Taiwan-funded enterprises in the city.

Direct investment from Taiwan in Tianjin has increased by 200 million US dollars a year. By the end of June, there were over 1, 400 Taiwan-funded enterprises in Tianjin with contract investments worth 2.7 billion US dollars.

Some 3,400 people from Taiwan and Tianjin took part in almost 550 exchanges programs across the Straits by the end of last year.
