China Urges Further Protection of Cultural Heritage
China's State Administration of Cultural Heritage (SACH) recently urged local relics protection organs to ensure safety of their relics.
SACH said 12 criminal cases on relics occurred in China between January and May. Two of them were concerned with sites under the state's top preservation, and the rest took place in Beijing, Gansu, Hainan, Hebei, Shaanxi, Shanxi and Tibet.
Nationwide relics protectors were also required to improve their safety facilities.
A SACH official said they will organize an overall check on heritage sites and museums across the country.
Statistics show that there were 37 criminal cases concerning cultural relics in 1999, loosing 148 relics.
Together with police and the customs, SACH is improving its existing regulations on protecting relics.
