Shanghai Donates Money for 770 Primary Schools

China's largest industrial base of Shanghai has donated money to set up 770 primary schools across the country, according to latest official figures.

Up to the end of June this year, the municipal committee of the Project Hope, a nationwide fund for poor students, had received 130 million yuan (16 million US dollars) of donations from Shanghai residents, an official source said.

Shanghai residents also helped some 40,000 students from poor families, the source said.

Donations have come from both young and old, including model workers, millionaires and peddlers.

Fu Ying, a 67-year-old woman who has cancer, saved 10,000 yuan from her slender retirement pension and donated all of her savings to poor families.

Another donated 70,000 yuan in the past three years.
