China Regrets Failure of Camp David Summit

China has expressed deep regret over the failure of the Camp David Summit, Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhu Bangzao said in Beijing Wednesday.

Commenting on the fruitless summit between Palestine, Israel and the United States, Zhu said, "We deeply regret that the negotiations failed to reach an agreement." The failure again reflects the complexity of the Mideast issue, and proves that there are twists and turns in the path toward peace.

"We believe that it is in the fundamental interests of the countries and peoples in the region to solve the Mideast issue through peaceful negotiations so as to maintain regional peace and stability and prevent turbulence," he said.

He said that under the current situation, the Chinese government sincerely hopes that both Israel and Palestine would be prudent and continue their peace talks, and that they would, based on relevant UN resolutions and in accordance with the principle of "land for peace", earnestly implement the agreements reached by them, so as to settle the final status of Palestine at an early date, he added.

He said that the international community should work harder to promote peace and help the Israelis and Palestinians to overcome the difficulties in their peace talks.

China, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, is closely following the situation in the region, and will, as always, work together with the international community for comprehensive, equitable and lasting peace in the Middle East, the spokesman said.
