WB Loans Help Ningxia Farmers Out of Poverty

Thanks to loans from the World Bank, poverty is almost a thing of the past for 44,800 poor families in mountainous areas in northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.

The families with a total population of 230,000 in Ningxia's four poverty-stricken counties have benefited greatly from 70 poverty-relief projects costing 298 million yuan (about 35.9 million US dollars). Of the total WB loans account for 18 million dollars.

The six year projects were initiated in October 1997. So far, these projects have used an investment of 112 million yuan, according to a local economic official.

The projects range from farming land development, infrastructure construction to establishing rural enterprises, the official said.

Also included in the projects are a variety of training programs for low-income farmers such as modern management, agricultural technology, breeding techniques and livestock raising.

Up to now, the 230,000 farmers, one third of the region's poverty-stricken population, are no longer living in poverty.
