Soeharto Corruption Charges to be Finalised

Government lawyers in Indonesia are today expected to finalise corruption charges against former president Soeharto.

The 79-year-old ex-leader is due to go on trial early next month.

Indonesians have keenly watched every move of the investigation of their former ruler of 32 years.

For months, investigators have questioned Soeharto, his family and business cronies and pursued allegations that Soeharto illegally amassed billions of dollars.

Today, charges against Soeharto will be finalised and presented to Indonesia's Attorney-General, Mazuki Daroesman.

It is not known how many corruption charges will be levelled against Soeharto, but there will be 140 witnesses called.

The trial will proceed despite Soeharto's legal team arguing that their ageing client now suffers from amnesia and has difficulties communicating.
