Defense Minister Meets Romanian DelegationDefense Minister Chi Haotian said Tuesday that there is a good basis for developing relations between the armed forces of China and Romania, and the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) are ready to make efforts to strengthen such ties.Chi, also vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission and a state councilor, made the remark in a meeting with Ion Mircea Plangu, Romanian state secretary for defense policy, and his delegation. Chi said that although the two countries are geographically far apart, their peoples and armed forces have a traditional friendship, and despite the changing international situation, Sino- Romanian relations have developed steadily over the past years. He added that the relations of friendly cooperation between the two countries and their armed forces have been developing smoothly in recent years. On the Taiwan issue, Chi said that the Chinese government will continue to pursue the policy of "peaceful reunification" and "one country, two systems", however, it is not committed to abandoning the use of force. He noted that the PLA is determined and capable of safeguarding sovereignty and territorial integrity of the motherland. He also thanked Romania for its support for China on the issues of Taiwan and Tibet. Plangu said that the two countries have a time-honored friendship, and they have always supported each other, expressing the conviction that bilateral relations based on principles will continue to grow. He said that with the globalization moving forward, China's role in the international arena can not be neglected, noting that the Romanian armed forces adopt an active attitude toward developing relations with their Chinese counterparts. After the meeting, Wu Quanxu, deputy chief of the PLA General Staff, held talks with Plangu.
