Two Corrupt Officials in SW China Prosecuted

Two former senior officials from the communication department of southwest China's Sichuan Province have been prosecuted recently on charges of accepting bribes and being involved in other illegal activities.

Liu Zhongshan, former director of the department, was found to have absconded 4 million yuan (about 482,000 US dollars) and accept bribes worth 60,000 yuan (about 7,229 dollars) in 1997 and 1998.

Zheng Daofang, former deputy director of the department, also allegedly accepted bribes worth 6.21 million yuan (about 748,000 dollars) and 100,000 US dollars, together with his wife and son between 1994 and April 2000.

Zheng could not explain how he procured money and other precious goods worth 12.77 million yuan (1.54 million dollars) which were confiscated in his apartment, office as well as his son 's office.

Investigation into other people and work units that were involved in the case is still under way.
