Sino-European Intellectual Property Symposium Opens

A high-profile international symposium on intellectual property (IP) which started Tuesday in Beijing will focus on setting up an effective system for protecting IP in China.

Nearly 300 delegates from governmental bodies, companies and institutions are participating the two-day meeting, jointly organized by China's State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) and the European Patent Office (EPO).

Topics of the symposium, titled "Protecting Intellectual Property in China Challenges and Opportunities in the 21st Century ", include relations between IP and global trade, advanced technologies, e-commerce, traditional cultures, trademarks, business secrets, and law enforcement.

Jiang Ying, commissioner of SIPO, said that China must improve its legislative procedures and law enforcement in the IP to safeguard the legitimate rights of IP owners.

She also urged nationwide companies and academic institutions to effectively use patents and other protection forms for their newly-invented technologies and products.

Ingo Kober, president of the EPO, appraised China's great progress in IP protection in the past decades. He said he hopes that there would be more exchange and cooperation in the field.

The symposium is an important part of the European Union-China Intellectual Property Rights Cooperation Program. The EU decided to inject 4.8 million Euros into the program to help train IP lawyers, judges and researchers in China.
