African Nations Urged to Develop Common Economic ModelThe United Nations Commission for Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has urged African countries to speak with one voice in order to have weight and compete effectively, the Post, a Zambian newspaper reported on Tuesday.Hassan Qaqaya, UNCTAD chief adviser for Capacity Building, Law and Policy, advised African countries to develop a common economic model so as to ensure their effective competition in the global economy. In an interview at the on-going regional seminar on Competition Law and Policy in Zambia's tourism capital, Livinstone, Qaqaya said countries in the region had numerous needs which if not properly identified may not withstand the effects of globalization. He further noted that with African countries lacking multinational companies, they were likely to face extinction from an open market and as such it was important to identify their needs and meet them. "For the African countries to compete effectively, certain rules will have to be applied like the differential treatment which will take into consideration their weaknesses," Qaqaya was quoted by the newspaper as saying. |
