China Reports Progress in Helping Handicaps

China has achieved remarkable achievements in helping people with disabilities, said Tuesday Deng Pufang, chairman of the China Welfare Fund for the Handicapped (CWFH).

About 1.7 million handicapped Chinese got various levels of recovery in 1999 and 73.4 percent of disabled children were enrolled at schools, Deng said, adding that compulsory education inspection for disabled children was also listed in the "2000 education Inspection System".

Reviewing the achievements made for disabled Chinese at the 17th CWFH Conference, Deng said that social environment has improved for the handicapped, and more healthy people are offering help to the handicapped.

In 1999, about 260,000 urban disabled people found jobs and 58, 000 got vocational training.

With the establishment of a basic security system for the handicapped in 668 cities and 1,600 counties and townships, about 1.6 million handicapped people are receiving social welfare benefits and 2.39 million disableds have been lifted out of poverty.

Last year, China's universities enrolled over 1,000 disabled students.
