Chinese Soccer "Technological First": Robot Team in RoboCup Finals

The Organizing Committee of the Robot World Cup Initiative (RoboCup) have notified the Chinese Science and Technology University that their robot soccer team has passed the preliminary matches and entered the finals of the 4th RoboCup world championships.

The RoboCup has been held every year since 1997. It is the largest robot soccer match in the world. The 4th RoboCup world championships will be held in Melbourne, Australia this August. There are competitions for four groups: Small Sized Robots, Medium Sized Robots, Simulation League and Sony Legged League. The Chinese Science and Technology University robot soccer team will participate in the Simulation League match.

There are 11 robots on each team in the Simulation League match. Each member is controlled by a set of unattached computer programs and they work together in the match. The 42 teams entered in this year's RoboCup were divided into eight groups to compete in single round matches. The top two teams of each group made it to the sweet sixteen. From there, they enter the semifinals and finals to determine the champion of the 4th RoboCup world championships.

The RoboCup uses cutting edge research and incorporates technologies from many fields, such as artificial intelligence, the study of robots, communication, sensory, precision optical machinery and bionic materials. It is really a high tech competition. RoboCup can reflect a countries' level of high tech and basic research in IT and automation.
