Cambodia King to Go to Beijing for Medical Checkup

Cambodia's King Norodom Sihanouk will travel to Beijing next month for routine medical treatment, his son said on Tuesday.

"His Majesty the King is going to China for a medical checkup on August 1," National Assembly President Prince Norodom Ranariddh told eporters.

The 77-year-old constitutional monarch has suffered from several ailments in recent years, including cancer. He spent nearly two months in Beijing earlier this year and returned looking healthy.

Ranariddh called for prayers for his ailing father and a halt to debate over who will succeed the king upon his death.

"We should not debate this, we have to pray for the king to have good and strong health," Ranariddh said.

Sihanouk is expected to remain in Beijing for about one month, Ranariddh said.
