Near-sightedness of Middle School Students Hereditary: Survey

Results from a recent survey of middle school students here show that nearly half are near-sighted and their condition is largely hereditary.

The survey was conducted by six professors with the Children's Hospital attached to the Medical University of Chongqing, China's fourth municipality in the southwest.

The professors noted that the rate of near-sightedness among the city's middle school students was 50 percent for those who have one short-sighted parent, while the figure rose to 93 percent when both parents were myopic.

According to the experts, following factors can cause myopia, or short sight: poor eyesight of parents, inadequate indoor lighting, posture while reading and writing, age when short sight developed, and whether a person wears glasses after being diagnosed with myopia.

The survey randomly sampled 1,008 middle school students in the city, 505 of whom are boys, according the experts.
