Inspections Urged to Ensure Railway Safety

The Ministry of Railways is conducting urgent inspections of railways and related facilities to ensure safe transportation this summer.

The inspections are part of a nationwide push for transportation safety after several serious accidents in the past few months killed hundreds of people.

The ministry issued an order to provincial bureaux to check rail conditions within their areas carefully.

Fire-and-flood-control measures along railways should be given extra attention, the statement ordered.

When railways are blocked by floods, provincial bureau chiefs should direct the rescue work and repair rails as soon as possible, the document said.

Local bureaux are ordered to build more bridges in some intersections along relatively high-speed rail lines (90-120 kilometres per hour), where most accidents have happened.

Railway construction sites should be strictly regulated, and local railway bureaux need to be responsible for on-the-job safety, the document said.

Railway stations are ordered to stop any overloading of cargo and passenger trains, and to severely punish those responsible.
