Sino-Indonesia Ties Continue to Develop: Hu Jintao

Visiting Chinese Vice-President Hu Jintao said Monday that the bilateral ties between China and Indonesia will continue to develop as the both sides are ready to enhance trust and expanding beneficial cooperation.

Addressing the Indonesian Council on World Affairs here, Hu noted that Indonesia was the first country among ASEAN ( Association of Southeast Asian Nations) members to establish diplomatic ties with China.

"Over half a century, China-Indonesia relations have, on the whole, enjoyed continuous development despite some twists and turns. In recent years, our two sides, working in a forward- looking spirit, have jointly added a new chapter of promoting friendship, deepening mutual understanding, enhancing trust and expanding cooperation to the annuals of our bilateral relations," he said.

Hu said that China and Indonesia, two big developing countries in Asia, have common task and responsibility to strengthen cooperation, promote development and safeguard the rights and interest of developing countries.

"I am convinced that with concerted efforts of both sides, China-Indonesia good-neighborly and friendly relations and cooperation will continue to make new progress," he said.

Referring to Indonesia's long and heroic struggles, Hu said, the Indonesian people had finally overthrown the colonial rule of more than 350 years and won national independence and that thereafter, the Indonesian government and people have made fruitful efforts to safeguard state sovereignty and invigorate national economy and played an active role in regional and international affairs.

"Now in Indonesia, we are seeing with our own eyes that the government and people of Indonesia are doing all they can, through readjustment and reform measures, to overcome the difficulty caused by the financial crisis and to bring their economy gradually onto the track of recovery. We heartily rejoice at your achievements and sincerely wish you greater success in your nation- building endeavors," he added.
