China Speeds up Development of New Energy Sources

China has worked out a ambitious plan to develop new and renewable energy sources in the next 15 years, according to Monday's China Coal Industry News.

The newspaper said by 2015 China will develop new and renewable sources of energy equal to amounting to 43 million tons of coal annually, accounting for 2 percent of the country's total energy consumption.

With the new and renewable energy sources, the country's coal consumption will be cut by 60 million tons annually. This will amount to a reduction of pollutants including 30 million tons of carbon dioxide and 2.1 million tons of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and soot.

The volume of China's annual exploitation and utilization of new and renewable energy sources amounts to three million tons of coal, accounting for about 0.2 percent of the total commercial energy consumption.

The newspaper said China is one of the world's largest energy producers and consumers, with coal accounting for 75 percent in China's energy production and consumption.
