6,000 Party, Government Officials in Chongqing PunishedA total of 6,788 leading officials of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in Chongqing, the leading metropolis in western China, were given legal or party disciplinary and administrative punishments in the past three years.They include 33 leaders at the prefecture or departmental level and 429 leaders at the county level, according to the municipal disciplinary inspection committee. The punished were implicated in 6,644 cases handled by the municipal Party disciplinary or government departments and judicial organs. Zhang Weigeng, deputy head of the urban engineering committee ( UEC) and a member of the municipal committee of the Chinese People 's Political Consultative Conference, and Chen Jianhe, also a UEC member, were expelled from the Party and removed from the posts for visiting prostitutes. Huang Faxiang, director of the land bureau at Fengdu County, was given a death penalty last February for misappropriating and embezzling 15.5 million yuan of government funds allocated for resettling affected people in the massive Three Gorges project. Wang Yunlong, deputy secretary of the municipal CPC committee, said the key to preventing corruption is to establish a complete law-enforcing mechanism.
