China to Build More Highways in West

China will build more highways in its western region, including two linking the heartland with the Tibet Autonomous Region, over the next five to 10 years.

One of the roads will link Dandong city in northeast China's Liaoning province with Lhasa, capital of Tibet, and the other will link this capital of Sichuan Province with Zhangmu, also in Tibet, Vice-Premier Wu Bangguo told a meeting on transportation development here today.

There are already three highways linking the inland areas with Tibet.

Wu said that China will also build another 14 main highways in the western region in the coming ten years.

He added that China will have completed a modern highway network in the west by 2030.

At the moment, roads in the western region are poor and insufficient. There are only 7.8 km of highways per 100 sq km in the region, only half of the national average.

China has made the improvement of infrastructure the priority in its program to develop the vast western region.
