Beijing Normal University Boosts Research Funds

Beijing Normal University has earmarked 27 million yuan (about 3.25 million U.S. dollars) as funds for research, in order to enhance the university's research level.

Under this new policy for stimulating scientific research, the family of the late Professor Yu Min received a 90,000-yuan allowance from the university, the Guangming Daily reported Friday.

This is the largest individual sum of money ever granted by the university. It was a reward for Yu's strenuous work in writing a linguistic paper, the newspaper said.

The university administration said that the granting of allowances will be linked to individual workloads, research projects and papers published in academic journals.

This will greatly increase the income of researchers, said Yuan Guiren, president of the university, adding that the concerned regulations should be made clearer, the newspaper said.

The university's Vice-President Shi Peijun said that 20 percent backbone researchers have shared 80 percent of the total allowance.

Beijing University and Qinghua University, China's two most prestigious universities, also support their research staff financially, to the tune of 300 yuan to 5,000 yuan a month.
