Self-help Pedestrian Traffic Lights Used in BeijingXu Youbin, an old man living near the Ping'an Avenue in Beijing, found it more convenient recently to cross the six-driveway avenue."Look, the self-help pedestrian traffic light has been recently installed at the street's intersections. When you push the button yourself before crossing the avenue and the light turns green, cars will stop to make way for you," Xu said in joyful tone. This kind of traffic lights, first in Beijing, were installed at all the six intersections along the Ping'an Avenue, according to Beijing's traffic police. As the city's second avenue parallel to and north of Chang'an Avenue, the installation of such traffic lights could help reduce traffic accidents at the intersections and nearby sections where traffic accidents were reported at a relatively high rate, a traffic official said. The city has 1.5 million motor vehicles and over ten million non-motor vehicles, he said, adding most of pedestrian-involved accidents in Beijing are caused by pedestrians' crossing of driveways in violation of traffic regulations. |
