China's First Environment Industrial Park Set Up

China's first environment industrial park engaged in desulfuration went into operation Wednesday in this capital of central China's Hubei Province.

Six companies and institutes became the first to set up businesses in the park, which will concentrate its research strength on developing desulfuration technology and equipment, and turning them into products.

Wuhan has chosen environmental protection as a pillar industry.

Li Tao, deputy mayor of the city, said that the municipal government will grant preferential policies, such as tax reduction, to companies engaged in environment protection, and encourage them to merge into large conglomerates.

China is the world's largest coal consumer, with over 1,000 thermal power plants discharging 23 million tons of sulfur dioxide every year. With the country's stepped-up efforts to treat pollution, the desulfuration industry is expected to have a big market.
