East China Province Closes Industrial Polluters

The coastal province of Shandong in east China has shut down more than 2,000 small township enterprises that polluted the environment, according to a local official.

These small plants, which are engaged in the production of iron, steel and cement, oil refining, coal mining, and coal-burning electricity generating, have resulted in a waste resources and energy, and posed a great threat to the local ecological environment.

It is imperative to close down these tiny plants, said Wang Renyuan, director of the province's trade and economic commission.

The province will close down 1,000 more such plants in the second half of this year, according to Wang.
