China's Registered Domain Names Rise RapidlyChina's registered domain names have increased by 20 times within the past two years.Up to June 2000, China's network users have reached the mark of 10 million, with registered domain names ending with "cn" amounting to 99,734. Whereas at the end of 1997, the figures were only 620,000 and 4,066 respectively. According to the report of China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) -- the national administration of domain registration, domain names, or registered on-line trademarks and identification cards, are becoming indispensable resources for enterprises as Internet and e-business are gaining popularity. How to facilitate Internet users with little knowledge of English to enjoy the conveniences of Internet has long been a problem in the development of Internet in China. Early this year, breakthroughs were made in the Chinese Domain System designed and developed by CNNIC. The new system functions with Chinese characters instead of English letters. On the first day of the new system's release, applications amounted to 36,000, equaling the past five-year total of registered English domain names. Now applications have skyrocketed to 70,000. |
