Entrepreneur Chosen as Students' Favorite Career

A recent national poll shows that most Chinese students intend to become in the future entrepreneurs, rather than the once-hottest career of scientist, according to today's China Youth Daily.

Of the 7,000-odd high-school graduates surveyed, 20.8 percent chose entrepreneur as their favorite career, 7.4 percentage points higher than engineer, which ranks the second.

According to the survey conducted by the newspaper, scientists, which was most admired by Chinese students and frequently cited in their compositions about their ideals, has slided to the fourth.

The change of students' career list may result from the recent trend that more and more college students have become promising entrepreneurs by setting up their own companies, the daily said.

Teaching, which students were reluctant to engage in because of its relatively low salary, regained the favor of students as a result of the country's efforts to better the treatment of teachers in recent years.

However, statesmen and journalists, the most active occupations in China's public life, did not enter the top eight.
