China Issues 1999 Report on Private Sector

The latest edition of the annual Report on Private Economy in China was recently published by the China Social Sciences Documentation Publishing House.

The 1999 report was finished by the Private Economy Research Center under the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. The center released the first edition, covering the 1978-98 period, last year.

The report covers such topics as the role of private economy in modern-day China and possible development trends of the private sector after it was officially recognized as an important component of China's socialist market economy.

According to the report, China now has three million registered private investors running some 1.5 million enterprises of various types. Their registered capital is nearly 1000 billion yuan (120 billion US dollars) and they employ over 18 million workers.
