Sichuan University to Train Reserve Army OfficersA working office on the selection of reserved army officers has been opened at Sichuan University, in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province. The working office was set up by the Chengdu Military Area Command of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), following the recent decision by the State Council and the Central Military Commission to reform the way to foster army officers. Army officers used to be graduates of military schools. The office signed last week an agreement with the university on the education of 60 reserve officers, who will join the PLA after their graduation. The 60 were selected from among 300 first- and second-year students, mostly majoring in electronics, computer science and mechanics, expertise which is badly needed by the armed forces. Under the agreement, each of the students will receive a subsidy of 5,000 yuan a year. Besides the normal courses at the school, they will be trained at barracks during vacations. The PLA Chengdu Military Area Command will also cooperate with other universities in the southwest. In the future, graduates of senior middle schools could also be selected for the purpose, according to PLA sources. |
