Myanmar Marks Martyrs' DayMyanmar held an annual state ceremony Wednesday to pay tributes to fallen heroes who sacrificed their lives in 1947 in the struggle for the country's independence.The 53rd Myanmar Martyrs' Day ceremony took place at the Martyrs' Mausoleum in commemoration of the passing away of the late National Independence Hero General Aung San and eight others. The ceremony was attended by Myanmar Minister of Culture U Win Sein on behalf of Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior-General Than Shwe. Present at the ceremony were also the late general's bereaved son U Aung San Oo and daughter Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, General Secretary of the opposition National League for Democracy. They laid wreaths and baskets of flower at the tombs as martyrs' family status. Fifty three years ago on July 19, 1947, General Aung San, along with his eight Councilor Members, was assassinated at the then Secretariat Office (now Office of the Ministers) in Yangon six months before Myanmar regained independence from the British colonialists on January 4, 1948. General Aung San was known as the founder of the Myanmar Armed Forces and was also Chairman of the All Burma Students' Union in the 1940s during the struggle for Myanmar's independence. |
