NPC Chairman Meets Chilean VisitorLi Peng, chairman of China's National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, said Tuesday that China, as a founding member of the Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum (APPF), attaches importance to its role in the region and has been an active participant in the organization.Li said this when meeting this afternoon with Mario Rios, visiting vice-president of the Senate of the National Congress of Chile. Chile will host the APPF annual session in January 2001. As the most influential parliamentary organization in the Asia- Pacific region, the APPF has emerged as an important forum for parliamentarians from all the countries in the region to exchange views upon various issues, Li said. Chile appreciates China's role in the APPF, and considers the participation of China in the coming session very important, Rios said. Li also expressed satisfaction with the progress of China's relations over the past 30 years with Chile, the first country in South America to establish diplomatic ties with China. China appreciates the adherence of the Chilean government and National Congress to the One-China policy, he added. Both sides also expressed their wishes to further enhance exchanges between the two parliaments and promote bilateral relations. |
