Our Daily Blasts DPP's ``Independence" StanceOur Daily condemns the obstinate pro-independence position of Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in a commentary published Thursday. On July 16, DPP's first plenary session of its ninth congress passed a declaration claiming that the DPP "has never changed its stance on the future of Taiwan" and "will never change its advocacy of the sovereignty, independence and autonomy of Taiwan", our Daily reports. The commentary says the move has once again exposed the DPP's die-hard adherence to its stance of "Taiwan independence" and continuance of its attempts to promote separatist activities. On October 13, 1991, the DPP's fifth congress passed a resolution to add the "Taiwan independence clause" of "the founding of a sovereign, independent and autonomous Republic of Taiwan and the formulation of the new constitution should be decided by all the residents of Taiwan through a referendum" into its party constitution, according to the commentary. Since then, the DPP has degenerated into a "Taiwan independence party", the paper comments. The DPP's advocacy of "Taiwan independence" and adherence to the statement that "Taiwan is a sovereign and independent nation" in an attempt to separate Taiwan from the motherland goes against the fundamental interests of all the Chinese people, including the Taiwan compatriots, and is firmly opposed by the Chinese people as a whole. It goes on to accuse the party of ignoring the call by some of its members and masses of Taiwan people to abandon the "Taiwan independence clause" in the DPP constitution and ignorance of the demands by compatriots of both sides and the political reality of the international community. This will only lead the party to a dead end, it comments. The Daily holds the leader of the Taiwan authorities responsible for the DPP's stubborn "Taiwan independence" stance. The fact that the Taiwan leader has said nothing about the revision of the "Taiwan independence clause" means that he agrees to keep it, the commentary says. On the one hand, he pledged not to declare "Taiwan independence" and press for a "referendum on reunification or independence". But on the other hand he has insisted on making no revision of the "Taiwan independence clause", which shows that he does not practice what he preaches, the Daily comments. The conspiracy of "Taiwan independence" is a severe crime in an attempt to split the motherland, the paper says. The majority of Taiwan compatriots do not support "Taiwan independence"; all the Chinese people will never allow the attempt of "Taiwan independence" to succeed; and the international community will never give any space for "Taiwan independence", the commentary says. "Taiwan independence" could bring nothing but catastrophe to the Taiwan people, it says, stressing that there will be no good end for those who insist that "Taiwan is a sovereign and independent nation" and promote so-called "Taiwan independence". The Daily reiterates that the One-China Principle is the basis and precondition for peaceful reunification, and it is the mainland's unswerving stance to oppose all kinds of separatist activities. "We are willing to make wide-ranging contacts and exchanges with all Taiwan-based political parties, groups and individuals advocating the One-China Principle and the development of cross-straits relations," the commentary says, pledging, "We will never contact parties and individuals advocating 'Taiwan independence'." Any attempt to set up "Taiwan independence" or "hold a referendum on Taiwan independence" will definitely result in a new crisis across the Taiwan Straits, the paper says. As a result, the cross-straits ties will never enjoy peace and such actions may further threaten peace and stability in the Asian-Pacific Region, with catastrophic consequences, it says. The Daily commentary points out that adherence to reunification and opposing separatism is a historical trend, saying that the DPP could only find a way out by recognizing and following the trends of the time and abandoning its "Taiwan independence" stance completely.
