Graduates Urged to Go West

Major universities in Tianjin have begun helping China's western areas' economic and educational development.

At Tianjin University 82 graduates have volunteered to work in western areas. They have signed agreements with Shaanxi, Sichuan, Yunnan and Guizhou provinces, the Tibet, Inner Mongolian and Xinjiang Uygur autonomous regions and Chongqing Municipality, sources from the university's information department said.

Wu Wendong, a student from Northeast China's Liaoning Province who studies mechanical engineering, plans to start working in Inner Mongolia in September.

"China's better developed eastern areas have gathered a large galaxy of talented people. They will perform excellently in western areas in dire need of higher-level talents," Wu said.

The university will work with officials in Sichuan Province and the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region to develop new technologies in a bid to cultivate an industrial foundation in the two areas, according to the university's vice-president Yu Daoyin.

Nankai University, one of China's prestigious educational institutions, will help develop solar energy technology for the Tibet and Inner Mongolia autonomous regions, according to Hong Guoqi, a university official.

The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is a large producer of fruit. To increase the region's fruit production, Nankai University will work with the region's Xinjiang University and Shihezi University, to expand the use of environmentally friendly pesticides and preservation techniques, Hong said.

To accelerate economic growth in China's western areas, the Ministry of Education earlier this year called on better developed eastern areas to help the underdeveloped western regions upgrade educational development.
