Clinton Suspends Part of Helms-Burton Law for Another Six Months
President Bill Clinton on Tuesday suspended the application of part of the Helms-Burton law for another six months, the White House said.
The Helms-Burton law aims at toughening embargo against
Cuba
by prohibiting foreign companies to invest or purchase property seized after the 1959 revolution in Cuba.
U.S. Western allies have strongly opposed the law since it was passed in 1996 and Clinton has suspended it every six months.
White House spokesman Joe Lockhart said that suspending the law was in the "national interest."
