Clash Between Kosovo Serbs, U.N. Forces Injures 9

Ethnic Serbs in Yugoslavia's Kosovo province clashed Monday night with U.N. peacekeepers, leaving nine Serbs injured, the Tanjug news agency reported Tuesday.

The conflict erupted in Kosovska Mitrovica when an unnamed local Serb youth, who had been badly tortured by Albanian terrorists, was arrested by the U.N. police at 9.00 p.m. (1900 GMT) Monday, the news agency said.

Over 100 Serbs gathered at the local police complex to demand the release of the youth. Several Serb youths seized an American policeman as hostage in exchange of the arrested Serb youth. The American shot and wounded a Serb man.

Afterwards, U.N. peacekeepers rushed to the scene to disperse the protesters, using tear gas and stun grenades. Nine Serbs were injured and sent to hospital, Tanjug said.

According to Yugoslav official statistics, Albanian extremists launched more than 5,000 terrorist attacks, leaving over 1,000 civilians dead and some 360,000 non-Albanian residents displaced one year after the NATO-led U.N. peacekeeping forces entered Kosovo in June 1999.
