Xinhua Blasts Taiwan's Pro-Independence PartyChina's official Xinhua news agency published a commentary Tuesday condemning the pro-independence stance of a Taiwan-based political party. The commentary says a Taiwan-based party organized by a handful of "Taiwan independence" elements in Taiwan province recently announced that they are going to found the "interim government of the Republic of Taiwan." The party also plans to issue a "declaration of independence" and apply to join the United Nations as "Taiwan State," the commentary says. These actions all show that separatists in Taiwan are stepping up their secessionist activities, it says. The Taiwan-based party, which was set up in 1996, is an extremist "Taiwan independence" body, and is attempting to make " political room" for "Taiwan independence." However the party has won little support from Taiwan people, and their candidate for "president" was ineligible to run due to a lack of petitioners. After the elections, 23 of its leading members quit the party, it says. The commentary berates these "Taiwan independence" extremists for their stubborn pro-independence positions, as the cross- straits ties are at a critical point and Taiwan compatriots are increasing their call for the improvement of the ties. These extreme activities will only disgust Taiwan people, rather than get their attention. The commentary criticizes the activities demanding "Taiwan independence," saying that the Chinese government and the Chinese people will not sit idly by when there are "Taiwan independence" forces at work. "Taiwan independence" is a blind road, the commentary says. It urges the small number of "Taiwan independence" elements to abandon their pro-independence stance and cease their activities to split the motherland. |
