China's Famous Actress Dies

Famous Chinese actress Zhao Lirong died of lung cancer at her home Monday. She was 73.

Born at Baodi County of Tianjin Municipality, Zhao early on studied a form of local opera especially popular in northern China.

In her 60 years of professional life, she was considered an outstanding talent in both stage opera and films.

She received the best actress award at the Tokyo International Film Festival in 1991 for her performance in "Spend the New Year."

She also won the 1992 Baihua Best Actress, an important national award given annually in China.

In her 60s, Zhao experimented with comic routines, short performances featuring two or three players. She gained a reputation for them in China and they became the highlight of her artistic life.
