Flood Ravages Central China Province

Central China's Henan Province has suffered an economic loss of over 7.82 billion yuan from repeated floods since June.

Since mid-June, heavy rain has hit the province on the middle reaches of the Yellow River, causing severe floods.

Statistics released today by the provincial bureau of civil affairs show that by July 16, 22.75 million people in 15 cities had been affected by the floods, and 7,678 people were at one time or another stranded by floods.

The floods damaged 215,000 residential houses and destroyed 122, 300 houses, according to the statistics.

The floods inundated 21.9 million about 1.46 million ha of farmland, seriously affecting local agricultural production. The province has raised more than ten million yuan in relief funds to help the flood-hit areas.
