Vice Premier Qian Meets Taiwan Kuomintang Delegation

Vice Premier Qian Qichen met Tuesday with a delegation from Taiwan's Kuomintang party, led by He Zhihui.

Qian confirmed the consensus reached by the Kuomintang delegation during its talks with the Mainland-based Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits.

During its stay in Beijing, the Taiwan delegation and the mainland association agreed to adhere to the consensus achieved in the 1992 talks between the mainland body and the Taiwan-based Straits Exchanges Foundation and to promote direct mail, shipping and aviation services.

Qian told the Taiwan visitors that the Taiwan authorities' avoiding of the One-China Principle is the fundamental factor in the two sides finding it difficult to resume cross-Straits talks and to improve cross-Straits ties.

To find a solution acceptable to the two sides to resolve their disputes under the One-China Principle will be helpful for the cross-Straits exchanges and for the final realization of peaceful reunification under the One-China Principle, Qian said.

"Under the One-China Principle, all Taiwan-based parties, groups and individuals are welcome to have wide-ranging contacts and talks with us to accumulate consensus and join forces for improving and developing cross-Straits relations," he said.

Chen Yunlin, director of Taiwan Affairs Office under the Communist Party of China's Central Committee and the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, attended the meeting.

The Taiwan delegation arrived in Beijing on July 16 at the invitation of the mainland association.
