Indonesian Govt to Stick to "One China Policy": FM
Indonesian Foreign Minister Alwi Shihab reiterated Tuesday that the Indonesian government will stick to its "One China Policy" and hoped the relationship between the two countries will be better and better.
"There is no problem with 'One China Policy'. We will stick to that," Shihab said.
He said: "I think that our relationship with China is an important thing. And we have a good relationship with China in many sectors. And politically, we have no constraints with China," he added.
Referring to the forthcoming official visit by Chinese Vice President Hu Jintao to Indonesia, Shihab said : "We hope that with the visit our relationship with China will be much stronger."
Hu Jintao is expected to arrive here on July 22-25, for his three-day official visit during which he is due to meet with President Abdurrahman Wahid and hold talks with his Indonesian counterpart Megawati Soekarnoputri and other officials.
China and Indonesia are close neighbors, and there is a traditional friendship between the two peoples.
Last year, Wahid and Chinese President Jiang Zemin reached a common understanding to establish and develop a long-term and stable relationship of good-neighborliness, mutual trust, and all- round cooperation, which has defined the future direction of bilateral ties.
The two countries signed a joint statement on future bilateral cooperation and a memorandum of understanding on the establishment of the joint commission for developing bilateral relations in May.
