Chinese Swimmer Wu Yanyan Banned for Four Years

Chinese swimming star Wu Yanyan, holder of the world record in women's 200-meter individual medley, was banned for four years from competition and fined 8,000 RMB (about US$964) after she tested positive for a banned steriod, the Chinese Swimming Association announced on Monday.

Wu's coach Wu Jicai was also banned for one year and fined 4, 000 (US$482) RMB, the CSA said in a new release.

The Chinses swimming officials had identified the drug last Thursday as the steroid 19-Norandrosterone. The test was conducted during the Chinese National Championships in May in the eastern city of Jinan.

The 22-year-old Wu, also the world champion in 1998 in Australia, set the world mark in the 200m medley at 200m medley at 2:09.72 in 1997 at the Chinese National Games in Shanghai.

Wu was dropped by China's Olympic team after failing the drug test and will miss the Sydney Olympics in September.
