Macao SAR Has More Trade Surplus Up to May

The Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China scored a trade surplus of 410 million patacas (51.25 million US dollars) in the first five months of this year, the latest official statistics show.

The surplus soared by 299.4 percent over the same period last year, according to the figures released Monday by the Statistics and Census Services of the Macao SAR government.

In the five months, the area's export and import volumes were 7.15 billion patacas (893.75 million dollars) and 6.74 billion patacas (842.5 million dollars).

Textiles and garments remained the leading export items, accounting for 82.1 percent of all exports from January to May.

On the whole, exports to the United States and the European Union took up 45.6 percent and 30.5 percent respectively of the total export volumes. And those to China's inland areas and Hong Kong represented 18 percent.

Most imports came from the Asian-Pacific region. China's inland areas and Hong Kong supplied 56.3 percent of the total while goods from the United States and the European Union accounted for 13.4 percent.
