Earthquake Hits Western Japan Today

A moderate earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.6 shook western Japan on Monday morning, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The quake was centered about 12 miles underground in the western part of Tottori prefecture (state), the Meteorological Agency said. Tottori city, the capital of the prefecture, is 310 miles, west of Tokyo.

Police in Tottori said no damage or injuries were reported from the tremor, which struck at around 8:00 a.m. and was felt in wide areas of western Japan, including the cities of Hiroshima and Kyoto.
