U.N. Rescues 222 Detained Peacekeepers In a rare display of force, U.N. troops rescued all 222 peacekeepers Sunday and 11 military observers trapped by rebels inside a U.N. base in eastern Sierra Leone. Helicopters delivered the 11 observers and injured peacekeepers to safety in Freetown shortly after the raid, but the remaining troops were forced to make their way along a 15-mile stretch of road under rebel gunfire to link up with a large contingent of U.N. troops. "It's great to be back," said British Maj. Andrew Harrison, one of the observers.
