China Southwestern Airlines Starts New Air Route to ROK

China Southwestern Airlines Saturday started a new air route from Chongqing to Seoul of the Republic of Korea (ROK).

It is the first direct flight ever operated by a Chinese air company from southwest China to ROK. Asiana Airlines of ROK launched flights from Seoul to Chongqing last month.

Return flights will be available every Wednesday and Saturday. Boeing 737-800 planes will be used to fly the new route, with each flight taking up three and a half hours.

Tourism officials of Chongqing predict that ROK will become another popular tourism destination after southeast Asian countries for local residents.

There are now more than 70 flights connecting Chongqing with 50 other Chinese cities and overseas destinations like Hong Kong, Macao, Nagoya, Thailand, Munich.

To cater to the demand of developing west China, Chongqing will spend 1.5 billion yuan to upgrade Jiangbei International Airport into the biggest airport in southhwest China, according to a local official.
