S. African President Declares War on Corruption

South African President Thabo Mbeki Saturday declared war on corrupt officials who are using state resources that are supposed to go to communities for their own ends.

Addressing a rally in Zwide township in Port Elizabeth, Mbeki urged communities to reject the names of any corrupt candidate nominated to stand for the local elections.

"We do not want such people in any of the ANC (African National Congress) leadership structures; if we still have such people and cannot identify them, let us sniff them out," he said after a meeting of the ANC's national general council (NGC).

Mbeki noted that although South African people have achieved freedom, the country is still divided into two.

"We know our country is still divided into white areas with big houses, sporting facilities and so on, on the one hand, while in the townships most of these are still non-existent," he said.

According to the president, the NGC had agreed to review all its existing programs and plans including the building of houses and business for job creation.
